Here is Ethel our retired laying hen. She is the last one left and I think she is lonely. She comes up to the deck to sun herself and get a treat from me. She likes bread of course and she loves grapes. One day all 3 of the animals Lucy, Daisy and Ethel were on the deck as we ate supper and they all ate the same stuff which surprised me...fish, potato, beans and zucchini. Maybe Ethel thinks she's a dog too? At night she takes herself back to the chicken coop which is inside our garden shed and instead of going into the area where there is straw she perches on the handle of Jim's gas lawn mower just inside the door. I go in to check on the other chickens (they aren't layers so they can't mingle with Ethel) and say goodnight to Ethel. Sometimes if Lucy or Daisy are in a particularly bossy frame of mind they will chase her off the deck but within minutes she is up there again looking for food and company. She also likes to go under the bird feeders and pick the seed off the ground that the other birds have dropped or flicked off. So far the other birds don't seem too afraid of her but then Ethel isn't very intimidating. I don't imagine she will live much longer as she must be about 2 and I think for a chicken that is getting up there. Once they stop laying it doesn't seem very long til they start going downhill. She has slowed down considerably since the beginning of this summer where she used to drive me nuts by going into my freshly mulched flower gardens and flick all the mulch out looking for bugs....grrrrrr..... If she saw me in there weeding she would waddle over very quickly almost a half run half fly kind of thing to see if I had found any worms while I was digging around. I think she almost got poisoned once not long ago when I had powdered the roses without even thinking about Ethel and I think when she was in looking for bugs ingested some because for a couple of days she was very lethargic and would hide under my day lilies and not move. I could pick her up and cuddle her without her flapping to get away. This would happen to all the chickens at the end, they would let me pick them up and they were so very light and fragile. Ethel wasn't so light so I figure it was poison. She recovered after two days...phew.....And now she is out and about daily until one day I am sure I will find her "asleep" somewhere.

Thank you for sharing Ethel with us! She sounds like a very personable lady, and she's lovely to look at! I'm glad the dogs don't give her to much of a hard time, it's clear she likes the company!

I had never realised chickens could have such strong personalities until I read about Ethal, also met my bosses chickens Trinny & Suzanna.

Trinny & Suzanna are always mooching around with the the cats and dogs and will pinch their food given half the chance. They also sneak in doors when your not looking and frighten the life out of you by clucking suddenly. LOL

Janet that is funny but the reason she is named Ethel is because of Lucy....Dar thought the same thing as you so she named her. She didn't have a name up until then, I used to just call her chickyboo......
Today she actually jumped up on a railing that is just outside our kitchen window and was peeking in. Daisy spotted her and started howling, scared the living daylights out of me. Earlier that day Jim had (I don't know how to put this gently) sent some of the chickens that we use for meat to rainbow bridge....I don't know how else to say that without upsetting anybody but it is what it is I guess. Anyway I was helping with the plucking not long before Ethel was at the window....gee I hope she didn't see anything to traumatize her.
While we were away camping our son didn't put the chickens in the coop early enough and some animal got two of them. One just had the head ripped off and the other one was torn apart. Jim thinks it was a weasel. Not much fun being a chicken around here.....unless you are named Ethel.

Oh and I forgot Gail, Ethel did come into the house a couple of times because Daisy always opens the screen with her nose. One time I came up the back hall and she was in the kitchen watching me approach but quickly clucked off (pardon the expression) when she heard my tone of voice and one other time she left her calling card on the floor so I would know she had been in while I was in the shower.

Got to admit you can alway stell where Trinny & Suzanna have been.

Last week one of the dogs was laid against the door and both chickens were cuddled up to it, unfortunately we were at the wrong side to get a picture.

They looked so cute.
